Sabbaticals on the Rise?

I was interviewed twice in 24 hours this week - for the Miami Herald and Conde Nast’s new mag Portfolio. Both writers mentioned to me an apparent increase in sabbatical popularity. I hope the back-to-back interviews are a sign that it’s true. The Miami Herald says:

Among the Fortune 100 Best Places to Work, 22 companies boast of offering fully paid sabbaticals. The Society of Human Resources says the percentage of large companies that offer sabbaticals has doubled in the past five years.

There’s never been an issue with this stuff in the UK - career breaks and gap years are practically the norm - but it’s nice to see stats on the rise here in North America.

(BTW, both interviews came via the insanely nice Clive Prout, otherwise known as The Sabbatical Coach. A talented coach, he also turned out to have a keen reading eye and helped out a bunch on the early drafts of Escape 101. Thanks Clive!)

The Conde Nast piece should be out next month.
